Victoria City Council Candidate

Karmen McNamara
I believe that creating an affordable, inclusive, and thriving city is about taking bold action.

I am seeking the nomination from Together Victoria, for the City of Victoria by-election, and the opportunity to act boldly for the City.

Karmen presents petition to build Crystal Pool according to the original plan at City Council.

Affordable CIty

Affordability goes beyond housing, and includes tackling the escalating cost of living in Victoria, including transportation, child-care, culture, and recreation.

This year, Karmen has worked with IMAX Victoria to improve the Accessibility Program for people with disabilities. As a result of their work,  IMAX is more affordable to some of the most vulnerable members of our community.

Inclusive City

Karmen believes in actively seeking out those who traditionally have been under-represented, so as to hear their perspectives.

This summer, she worked with the staff at Crystal Pool to install a lift in the changeroom, so that people with severe physical disabilities could also access the facilities. She believes that taking action to create more inclusive spaces benefits everyone.

Thriving City

Karmen commits to championing sustainability and creating an urban core that meets the needs of all who work, live, and play in our beautiful city.

Over the past few years, she has volunteered with Cool Aid through their Every Step Counts program, supporting people struggling with mental illness and addictions. She believes that building a supportive community benefits all of us.

Land Acknowledgement

I would like to acknowledge that we are organizing on the homeland of the Lekwungen peoples, now known as the Songhees and Esquimalt Nations.

I recognize that Turtle Island, now known as Canada, and including the City of Victoria, was established through displacement and colonial violence. All levels of government, including municipal governments, have and continue to contribute to the colonization.

I believe in working with all residents on efforts that support reconciliation.
